  • Tries to dissect an ethical term by questioning a person who claims to understand the term’s meaning – eventually concludes neither he nor the ‘expert’ really know

Socrates: is it possible to seek for something one does not yet know (eg a definition of ‘virtue’)?

Dialogue ends with a state of ‘aporia’:

  • We still don’t know what ‘virtue’ is
  • However, we know what is that we don’t know
  • If we already know what its attributes were, is there any point in looking for it?
